About Dr. Ghaniul Akram Sabzwari

Professor Dr. Ghani-ul-Akram Sabzwari, born in 1935 in Muzafarnagar, UP, India, spoke about forming Library Promotion Bureau of Pakistan in 1966 in Karachi, Pakistan. “Library Promotion Bureau was initiated to support researchers and students of Library sciences. The main objectives were to publish books in Urdu on topic of Library Sciences, provide resource to researchers and to develop strategic plans for the Government to establish libraries in Pakistan.”

He is one of the pioneers in the field of Library & Information Science in Pakistan, is the Founder President of the Library Promotion Bureau (LPB), established in 1966, and the founding Chief Editor of the Pakistan Library & Information Science Journal (PLISJ), published quarterly since 1968. Over his remarkable career, he has authored 68 books and guided generations of scholars through his research and mentorship. He also served as Chairperson of the Department of Library & Information Science at the University of Karachi and spent twenty-seven years at Umm Al-Qura University in Saudi Arabia, before retiring to continue research and scholarly contributions.

Prof. Sabzwari is recognized as an icon of the profession, with his most recent publication being *First Famous Facts of the Muslim World* (2012). He is currently celebrating his 85th birthday on December 2 with family in the United States, after decades of celebrations in Pakistan where his peers and students honored his contributions. His last public appearance in Pakistan, prior to his departure to the US on November 1, was at the Felicitation Ceremony of Asma Hassan’s *Mayar-e-Zindagi* hosted by the LPB on October 28. He continues to be admired for his lifelong dedication to scholarship, community service, and the promotion of knowledge.
